Panama Update – Week 3

Well…I had someone call this my weekly 1000 word essay last week.  So I would love to say I’ll keep it short…but I doubt that is possible.  I’m ok with it as long as I don’t start getting emails returned with red marks.  J

Something pretty amazing happened this week, well amazing for me anyway.  I will have to give a little back story to let you know just how excited I am.  There are two books written about the first missionaries to the Kuna Indians.  The books are called Born Primitive and Beauty is a Ring in My Nose.  I read both of them when I first began ministering to the Kuna Indians here in Panama.  I tried several times to try to find the author’s family, because I had no idea that the author, Marjorie Vandervelde, was still alive.  I found out from one of our team members here that she is 101 years old and living in Iowa.  Jerona, a member of our team, had the contact information of a close friend of hers.  She gave me the email and I contacted the author’s friend, Maureen Horsley.  This past Saturday, through Ms. Maureen I was able to communicate with the author.  I was able to tell her the major impact her books had on my calling to be a missionary to the Kuna Indians.  This book helped me understand so much about the Kuna culture and I also became captivated with Lonnie and Marvel Iglesias, the first missionaries to the Kuna’s.   Lonnie Iglesias was a Kuna that was forced to leave his island.  He moved to the U.S. and married an American woman.  They then came back to the islands as missionaries. 

We had been trying to find copies of the books because they had been out of print for several years.  Ms. Marjorie had 14 copies left tucked away in her closet and agreed to sell them to us!  We have also, for years, talked about how amazing it would be to see these books turned into a movie.  I asked Ms. Marjorie’s permission to look into trying to get that done.  And her response was, "If Christy wants to look into my books being made into GOOD  movies.... tell her "GO, GO GIRL!"  I have instantly fallen in love with this spirited 101 year old saint.  I have started to pray for an opportunity to visit her.  I cannot imagine being able to sit and listen to the amazing stories I know she has to tell.  Now I am in the process of researching how one goes about making a book into a movie.  Please help us pray about this, it would be an amazing tool to use for the Christian Kuna’s here to learn how important reaching their own people is for the kingdom.  Most of these believers have no idea how their people first came to hear the gospel.  If anyone has any experience or knowledge on this subject your help would be greatly appreciated.

We also had a direct answered prayer, although maybe not as dramatic as this last story.  This past Sunday Pastor Roosevelt’s church was having a baptism at an encampment on the other side of the city.  We did not have transportation and knew that taking a taxi would be too expensive.  We prayed for God to provide a way.  Late Saturday night we still did not have a way so I asked a friend of mine if I could ride with him on the bus.  Clara, instinctively, decided that she would just stay home. We have been told numerous times that the busing system here is not something we want to experience.  They are basically old school buses with no air conditioning.  But I was willing to try it, at least once.  However, about an hour later Kathy called us and said that her nephew was willing to pick us up and take us to the baptism.  All we had to do was pay a little gas.  I thanked God for sparing me the adventure of the overly crowded, hot bus!  We were able to witness seven new believers be baptized.  Well actually they said 8 because one of the ladies was pregnant. 

Please continue to help us pray for the transportation we need.  At our last meeting, this past Friday, we decided as a team to pray over a van that Maxi has found.  We want to stand in faith believing that God will provide what His children are asking him to give.  We know that we do not have to have this particular van, but we are asking for God’s favor on us.  We believe that God wants to give good things to His children, when they pray according to His will.

La Actualización de Panamá – Semana 3

Bien…tuve alguien llama este mi semanal 1000 ensayo de palabra la semana pasada. Así que adoraría decir que yo lo mantendré corto…pero dudo que eso sea posible. Estoy bien consigo siempre que yo no comience que consigue correos electrónicos regresados con marcas rojas.

 Algo asombrar lindo sucedió esta semana, asombrando bien para mí de todos modos. Tendré que dar una historia pequeña de espalda a permitirle saber justo cómo emocionó soy. Hay dos libros escritos acerca de los primeros misioneros al Kuna indios. Los libros son llamados Nacido Primitivo y la Belleza es un Anillo en la Nariz. Leí ambos cuando empecé primero atendiendo al Kuna indios aquí en Panamá. Traté varias veces para tratar de encontrar la familia del autor, porque yo no tuve la menor idea que el autor, Marjorie Vandervelde, estuvo todavía vivo. Averigüé de uno de nuestros miembros del equipo aquí que ella tiene 101 años y vivir en Iowa. Jerona, un miembro de nuestro equipo, tuvo la información de contacto de un amigo íntimo de suyo. Ella me dio el correo electrónico y yo contacté el amigo del autor, Maureen Horsley. Esto el sábado pasado, por Sra. Maureen que pude comunicar con el autor. Pude decirla que el mayor impresiona sus libros tenidos en mi llamamiento para ser un misionero al Kuna indios. Este libro me ayudó comprendo tanto acerca de la cultura de Kuna y acerca de yo también llegué a ser cautivado con Lonnie y la Maravilla Iglesias, los primeros misioneros al Kuna. Lonnie Iglesias fue un Kuna que fue forzado a dejar su isla. El movió a EEUU y se casó a una mujer norteamericana. Ellos entonces regresaron a las islas como misioneros. Habíamos estado tratando de encontrar copias de los libros porque ellos habían sido agotados durante varios años. ¡La Sra. Marjorie tuvo 14 copias dejaron ocultó en su armario y concordó en vendérnoslos a nosotros! Tenemos también, durante años, habló de cómo lo asombrando sería de ver estos libros se volvieron una película. Pregunté el permiso de Sra. Marjorie para estudiar tratar de conseguir eso hecho. ¡Y su respuesta fue, "Si Christy quiere estudiar mis libros para ser hechos en películas BUENAS. ... la dice" VA, VA a CHICA"! Yo me he enamorado instantáneamente de este animado de 101 años de edad santo. He comenzado a orar para una oportunidad de visitarla. Yo no puedo imaginarme puede sentarse y escuchar las historias asombrosas que saben que ella tiene que decir. Ahora estoy en el proceso de investigar cómo uno va acerca de hacer un libro en una película. Ayúdenos por favor oramos acerca de esto, seríamos un instrumento asombroso utilizar para el Kuna cristiano para aquí aprender alcanzar cuán importante a sus propias personas son para el reino. La mayor parte de estos creyentes no tienen la menor idea cómo sus personas vinieron primero oír el evangelio. Si cualquiera tiene cualquier experiencia o el conocimiento en este sujeto su ayuda sería apreciada mucho.

 Nosotros también tuvimos una oración contestada directa, aunque quizá no tan dramático como esta última historia. Esto la iglesia de pasado domingo Pastor Roosevelt tenía un bautismo en un campamento en el otro lado de la ciudad. Nosotros no tuvimos transporte y supimos que eso tomando un taxi sería demasiado caro. Oramos para Dios proporcionara una manera. Tarde la noche del sábado nosotros todavía no tuvimos una manera tan yo pregunté a un amigo mío si podría cabalgar con él en el autobús. Clara, instintivamente, decidió que ella acaba de permanecer en casa. Hemos sido dichos numerosos tiempos que el transportando en autobús sistema aquí está no algo nosotros queremos experimentar. Ellos son autobuses escolares básicamente viejos con ningún aire acondicionado. Pero estuve dispuesto a tratarlo, por lo menos una vez. Sin embargo, acerca de una hora Kathy posterior nos llamó y dijo que su sobrino estuvo dispuesto nosotros recoger y tomarnos al bautismo. Todo tuvimos que hacer fue la paga un gas pequeño. ¡Di gracias a Dios para reservarme la aventura del autobús excesivamente llenado y caliente! Pudimos presenciar siete nuevos creyentes son bautizados. Bien realmente ellos dijeron 8 porque uno de las señoras estuvo embarazada.

 Continúe por favor para ayudarnos oramos para el transporte que necesitamos. En nuestra última reunión, esto el viernes pasado, nosotros decidimos como que un equipo para orar sobre una camioneta que Maxi ha encontrado. Queremos pararse en creer de fe que Dios proporcionará lo que Sus niños lo piden que dando. Sabemos que nosotros no tenemos que tener esta camioneta particular, pero pedimos el favor de Dios en nosotros. Creemos que Dios quiere dar cosas buenas a Sus niños, cuando ellos oran según Su hace.
